Keeping Fit as You Age

As we get older we tend to forget things, lose our balance more, and gain a few (or maybe more than a few) unwanted pounds. It is why I stress to my older clients how important it is to train 2 or 3 times a week. At GoGo Fit I encourage and challenge these clients so that it will benefit them in their daily activities. It is never to late to start exercising!

Here are some benefits of exercising for the elderly:

  1. Increased Bone Density – The stronger your bones it is less likely you will suffer a break if you happen to fall. Osteoporosis makes your bones weak and brittle. Weight bearing exercises and resistance training help prevent weak bones.
  2. Better Balance – Exercise makes the core stronger. Strong abs and a strong lower back help stabilize an individual. I always stress ‘tighten your abs’ when we do balancing exercises.
  3. Keep Your Independence – Exercise will prevent you from being disabled and always needing someone to care for you.
  4. Flexibility –  I like to do a lot of stretching and foam rolling to help with flexibility and joint problems.
  5. Increased Metabolism – Strength training increases muscle mass and the more muscle you have the faster your metabolism and the faster you burn calories. Being overweight leads to other health problems. A faster metabolism helps control weight by reducing body fat.
  6. Improve Your Mood – Exercise is not only good for the body, it is great for the mind. Exercise reduces stress and also reduces depression. I think that everyone exercised daily it would put therapists out of business!
  7. Great For Your Body! – It helps everything from controlling diabetes, your lungs, and most importantly, your heart.

At GoGo Fit you can work out privately or with a friend. Give Sue Teoli a call at 203-623-3112 to talk opportunities.
